When I first saw “Facing History and Ourselves” on the list of classes available to seniors while creating my schedule last year, it was a little unclear to me. I wasn’t sure if it was a class about society or personal experiences, or even if it was simply history in chronology like other history classes. However, I knew it had to be something unique, as its title was not as simple as “Senior History,” or of the like. This was something that intrigued me. I am a philosopher at heart, someone who loves digging deep into conversation and spilling my guts. So when I thought more about it, I knew that a major part of the class was reflecting about ourselves, which seemed to be right up my alley. This is why I chose “Facing History and Ourselves.”
So what really was the class all about? In no time at all, I learned that this was not a simply history class. Mr. Gallagher was determined to create an experience like none other. With films almost every day, it was evident that there was a technique that Mr. Gallagher had in mind. It was to provide visual evidence that made the most important times in the world’s history more real than ever before. By doing so, I was compelled to find myself in the shoes of people in history, such as those of Nazi Germany. Mr. Gallagher used film as a major outlet to historical reality, while also handing out important historical documents, informational articles and packets, and also his own moving words to teach us. The ultimate goal of his is that each and every student in the class gains “civic agency.” This term describes a quality in a person who remains ultimately true to good morals and personal beliefs. It is someone who does not fear standing out or making a difference. It is someone who does not remain a bystander. It is someone who is the best person that they can be. It is someone with respect. Mr. Gallagher’s passion for the class and for this goal is so obvious that with every single period that passes, it is evident that students yearn to come back each day.
